What you need to know before trying Botox

Although it has become one of the most widely-practiced cosmetic procedures in recent years, Botox is still surrounded by rumours and questions about its efficacy and the dangers of improper use.

We take a closer look at the common questions asked by patients and how to have Botox safely injected for excellent results.

What is Botox?

Botulinum toxin, more commonly known as Botox, is a highly purified toxin that can be injected into various areas of the face in order to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, leaving skin looking younger and more vibrant.

The results, although temporary, can be highly effective and the most common wrinkles it is used for are forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet. It can also be used to reduce the appearance of smoker’s lines around the mouth and porous skin on the chin.

It works by slowing the contractions of muscles that create wrinkles and usually takes up to two weeks for measurable results to appear.

Are the horror stories true?

Many people are nervous about using Botox due to the horror stories that are told the world over, such as the freezing of muscles which creates an emotionless look or the shiny forehead skin which can give away true age even after treatment.

Simply put, bad cosmetic surgeons – or those who are not medically qualified – are not going to provide the same level of care as more reputable surgeons.

It truly depends on the individual patient how much Botox should be used and what areas of the face it will be most effective on. Therefore it is imperative that potential patients look for the most well-respected and highly-qualified clinic available in order to get the best possible care.

Is Botox dangerous?

As with any cosmetic procedures, there can be side effects. These are usually low-level effects such as bruising or droopiness of the skin. However, they usually correct themselves within a couple of weeks, by which time the results should be clearer.

Some patients report a mild pain during treatment but it’s rare to experience any further discomfort. Botox comes dehydrated, leaving the clinic to dilute – and some less reputable clinics may over-dilute in order to charge the same amount of money for less product.

This is again something to watch out for when choosing your clinic.

Is it obvious to my friends and family if I’ve had Botox?

The results depend entirely on how much you use and how often.

However, the reduction in wrinkles is sure to be noticed.

If you wish to remain anonymous regarding your use then perhaps a few treatments over time can stop it from looking like a sudden and drastic change.

Botox can last up to four months so it is possible to try it out and see if the results are noticeable, if you like them and feel more confident, perhaps have another session.

When should I start using Botox?

There is no right age to start using Botox – but there is no need to use it if you haven’t developed wrinkles!

Botox is great for reducing the line and wrinkles you notice more often, as you get older. And it can be an excellent way to improve your self-confidence or get rid of annoying lines that you have coped with for a long time.
