WHY CONSIDER EARFOLD® PROCEDURE
Earfold® is a procedure designed to create the antihelical fold (see photos) that results in correction of prominent ears. Earfold may be considered for anyone who has ear protrusion due to lack of antihelical folds. It is a minimally invasive procedure performed under a local anaesthetic. The procedure takes less than 30 minutes to perform.
WHAT IS EARFOLD®
Earfold®is a small implant with curved configuration, with engaging teeth made up of a highly elastic material called nitinol and is coated with 24-carat gold, to reduce visibility under the skin. With its elasticity the implant springs into shape thus creating a fold of cartilage under the skin. This results in the formation of a natural looking antihelical fold and thus reduction of prominence.
CONSULTATION FOR THE PROCEDURE
During the consultation all your concerns will be addressed. The exact reason for the prominence will be determined. Earfold®temporary positioners are used to demonstrate the exact position of the ear which mimics the end result of the actual procedure. All risks and benefits of the procedure will be discussed.
BENEFITS OF THE PROCEDURE
The procedure is minimally invasive and carried out under a local anaesthetic. The results are predictable, reproducible, predetermined with minimal post-operative care.
LIMITATIONS OF THE PROCEDURE
This procedure is suitable only when the prominence is related to lack of or poorly formed antihelical fold. Any other factors that lead to ear prominence would require procedures such as otoplasty.
WHAT TO EXPECT POST-OPERATIVELY
A small dressing is placed onto the operated area, this is removed after 24-48 hours. The stitches dissolvable, mild pain and discomfort tends to settle quickly. One can proceed with their routine immediately after the procedure.
POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS OF THE PROCEDURE
Occasional infection may require treatment and rarely removal of the implant.
