WHO IS LIKELY TO GET SKIN CANCER?
Cancer of the skin is the most common form of head and neck cancer. Sun exposed areas of the face are most commonly affected. Anyone can develop a skin cancer, and this risk increases with time. However the following groups of people carry a higher risk.
- Fair skin that burns easily and does not tan and is not sun protected.
- Light coloured eyes: blue, grey or hazel
- Blonde or red hair
- Numerous freckles
- Outdoor work or heavy sun exposure in the past

- Squamous cell cancer (SCC)
- Malignant melanoma (MM)
- Other rare cancer
WHAT ARE THE EARLY SIGNS OF SKIN CANCER?
Skin cancer treatment is much easier when the cancer is detected early. Regular monitoring of the skin is therefore recommended. Expert consultation is advised if a lesion in the skin shows signs of
- Growth and irritation
- Crusts and bleeds repeatedly
- Changes appearances in colour or borders
- Does not heal completely
HOW IS SKIN CANCER TREATED?
The commonest form of treatment for skin cancer is surgery. Other forms of treatment include radiotherapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and use of certain types of creams.
We recommend surgery as the definitive treatment for most patients, though treatment is tailored to individual patients needs.
