What is a Facial Filler? | London Facial Surgeons

What is a Facial Filler?

A filler is an injectable substance used to correct small defects in the skin and add volume to skin creases, cheeks, lips and other areas.

Am I a candidate?

Volume loss plays an important role in the ageing process and filler materials to restore some of these changes.

How is the procedure performed?

Fillers are injected using very fine needles in exact location where the affects are desired. The amount of filler used depends on the correction/augmentation required.

After effects of fillers

Adverse effects are rare. Bruising is the commonest consequence and occurs when small blood vessels are punctured during injection. This usually settles within a few days and may be easily concealed with make up. Slight swelling at the injection site is common and settles with 24 hours. Occasional itching and redness can also occur. Any serious risks such as persistent lumpiness or infection are extremely rare.

The fillers are broadly categorised in to

  • Hyaluronic acid based fillers (Restylane family and Juvederm family),
  • Sculptra (Poly L Lactic Acid), which is a volumiser
  • Other fillers such as Radiasse, Silicone and Collagen based fillers.

We generally use Hyaluronic acid and Poly L Lactic acid fillers.
